Broad rivers / basalt / wine-country polish
Columbia Basin, Tri-Cities & Walla Walla
Read the rivers and basalt first. Wine country makes more sense when the wider basin is visible.

Why this chapter belongs
River-wide, cultivated, scientific, composed.
Tri-Cities, Columbia and Snake river landscapes, Hanford history, irrigated agriculture, and Walla Walla’s compact food-and-wine scene create a sophisticated southeastern chapter.
- Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick form one interconnected urban area with different riverfronts and communities.
- Walla Walla’s walkable center is an easy visitor base, while the surrounding valley expands the food, agriculture, and landscape story.
- Hanford’s history requires careful, institution-led interpretation rather than casual roadside simplification.
Before the itinerary
Three field notes that change the day.
Build the loop
Use rivers, museums, public landscapes, and a meal to keep a tasting itinerary from becoming repetitive.
Plan the driver
Tasting rooms are geographically spread. Reservations and a sober transportation plan belong in the first draft.
Watch exposure
Heat, wind, and sun can be intense. Carry water and adjust outdoor timing.
Eat
Look for a living food system.
- Walla Walla’s compact restaurant and tasting-room core
- Tri-Cities Mexican food and regional produce
- Seasonal food tied to vineyards, onions, grains, and orchards
Stay
Choose the morning you want.
- Downtown Walla Walla for walkability
- Tri-Cities for river access and broader regional services
- Valley lodging when transportation is already solved
Getting around
A car is the practical regional default. Some Walla Walla trips can stay walkable in town, but valley tasting requires a plan.
Seasonal tradeoff
Spring and fall offer softer temperatures. Summer is bright and hot; event and release weekends can be busy.
Local norm
Do not conflate public viewpoints with unrestricted access to farms, vineyards, or federal lands.
