Business guide / official starting points
Starting a business in Washington
The short answer: define the activity and location, choose the structure, register when required, then complete state, local, and industry licensing.
Direct answer
There is no single universal filing.
Entity registration, a Washington business license, city endorsements, professional rules, permits, and tax setup are related but not interchangeable. Start with the state’s official business guide and licensing tools.
Define the activity and location
Licensing and local requirements depend on what you do, where you operate, and whether you have employees or regulated work.
Choose a structure deliberately
Compare legal, tax, ownership, and administrative consequences with qualified advisers when needed. The state does not choose for you.
Register the entity when required
Use the Washington Secretary of State for applicable entity filings, and keep the confirmation and UBI information.
Complete state licensing
Use the Department of Revenue business licensing resources and wizard to identify state and participating local endorsements.
Check city, county, and industry rules
Zoning, permits, professional licensing, health, signage, home occupation, and other requirements can sit outside the first state filing.
Set up ongoing obligations
Plan for taxes, payroll, workers’ compensation, unemployment insurance, annual reports, renewals, records, and beneficial ownership rules that may apply.
Decisions to settle first
Bring these answers to the official tools.
- 01Owners
Who owns and controls the business?
- 02Activity
What exactly will it sell or do?
- 03Location
Where will work, storage, and customer activity occur?
- 04People
Will it hire employees or contractors?
